This year has been turbulent for Pakistan. New schisms & reconfigurations have emerged between Pakistan’s military and sections of the civilian political elite, in a context marked by populist mobilisation. Beyond elite power tussles, how can we understand the present crisis of political authority? What are the sociological roots of resurgent authoritarianism and populism; and what are the possibilities for democratic struggles afforded by the current moment?
