Cockpen Road (Cockspin Road) Level Crossing, Fordham, Cambridgeshire
Date filmed: 30/06/2020
Route: Ipswich to Ely Line
- Between Soham and Chippenham Junction
Location: Cockpen Road, Fordham
Trains: Class 66 (Freightliner)
A half barrier level crossing, one of two located within Fordham in the rural and pleasant East Cambridgeshire District between Ely and Newmarket, near the county border with Suffolk. This level crossing has twin-arm half barriers in operation to the day of recording, as well as two quiet alarms, one of which looked brand new at the time of recording, although it is not audible in this video. The alarm that can be heard has a skipping tone, and sounds rather satisfying, which couples in nicely with the view of the whole level crossing in operation in this video. The surroundings here are peaceful, and the road that this level crossing is on is surrounded by fields
As the train approaches, the camera pans around and zooms in on the larger and busier level crossing in this area - Fordham Level Crossing. The extra light pointing into the field there can be seen flashing, as well as the two on the side opposite to it, almost in rhythm to the skipping alarm at this level crossing. I specifically chose this perspective to film the crossing from so that the other one can be seen without me having to move, and if you listen carefully, the camera can be heard whirring away as I zoom in on the larger crossing, going to show how quiet the area is. A long freight train hauled by a Class 66 in Freightliner colours then passes towards Ely.
Thanks for watching!
