Today I will tell you about the
work of G.W. Pabst " The Joyless street" which became a landmark of
" New Objectivity " in cinema.
Contemporaries couldn't accept this film.
Censors cut the film.

This is what screenwriter Wille Haas told about scenes which were banned by censors
(It's quotation)):

"The real hero of this film is a typical inflation-era butcher shop owner, who officially is “out of meat,” but who behind closed doors distributes as much as anyone wants, especially to young women and girls who do favors for him. And so he prostitutes an entire street. The fact that this and much worse happened during the inflation is documented in hundreds of newspaper reports. The main scene has been eliminated, the one in which a young woman hears the price that her friend pays for her meat in the adjacent room. I did not show any of this overtly at the time, only the horrified face of the girl who hears what is happening, a pantomimed monologue scene played by the great Asta Nielsen. But now the censor has cut out this scene—now, after three years. The butcher now gives the girl meat for some inexplicable reason, probably out of magnanimity. The film is ruined."


Anyway,today we've seen more violent scenes then in "The Joyless street". We are so lucky now because this film was restored and we could watch the longest survived version- 2 hours and 20 minutes.
