A two car accident during a Sunday IndyCar race in Pennsylvania has turned fatal, as British Andretti Autosports driver, Justin Wilson, succumbed to injuries he sustained from flying debris.
In the final laps of Sunday’s race at the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, Sage Karam was in the lead when he lost control and his car hit the right wall, scattering debris on the track. As the other drivers attempted to avoid the debris, British driver Justin Wilson was struck on head by the nose cone from Karam’s car.
The impact of the nose cone on his helmet immediately rendered Wilson unconscious. His car then sped out of control into an interior wall. He remained in a coma until he died in hospital on Monday.
Justin Wilson won seven times over 12 seasons as an IndyCar driver. He is the first IndyCar driver to be killed in a crash since another British driver, Dan Wheldon, died in Las Vegas in 2011.
