The Outreach Programme at NID functions actively in the areas of local crafts and allied, socially relevant sectors. It brings the Institute's design expertise, experience and training facilities to peoples and communities that were not part of its regular education and client service activities.

The motto of the Outreach Programme is to facilitate improved livelihood opportunities and income generation for those included in the purview of its activities, and strives to socially and economically empower artisans and marginalised communities. The Programme undertakes projects for government and non- governmental organisations in the broad domains of Research & Documentation, Craft Practice and Training Institution Building.

The Outreach Programme has recently expanded the purview of its engagement from the Indian crafts and social sectors to the SAARC Nations and continent of Africa, in recognition of the considerable opportunities to develop an ethos of cross cultural collaboration for sharing skills, knowledge and experiences.
