Citrulline is an ingredient often found in pre-workout mixes. It is a non-essential amino acid. This means that your body can also make it. So you don't just have to get it from your diet. Your liver and your intestines, among other things, produce citrulline.
If you want to buy citruline, it is often en called L-citruline or citruline malate. Malate is an organic salt and it is one of the intermediates of the citric acid cycle. This is the process by which energy (ATP) is formed in your body.
In your kidneys, citrulline is converted to arginine. Ammonia is converted into urea and Ammonia is one of the waste products that elevate when you workout. The accumulation of waste products through training is also called metabolic stress.
In addition, citrulline increases your nitric oxide (NO) levels when you take it. This causes your blood vessels to open slightly more. This improves blood flow, and thus also the removal of waste products. So actually it decreases metabolic stress during training. You basically feel the burn not as quickly compared to not taking it.
The effect of citrulline on strength is only quite small. It maybe helps for Like a single rep at the end of your last set. And some studies even find no effect of citrulline malate on strength performance at all.
