🤯 Stop the heat packs!
The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (the ABM) recently updated their protocol for treating clogged ducts and mastitis - and a lot of it goes against what has been typical recommendations, including:
⭐️ Use ICE (rather than heat)
⭐️ Prioritize nursing infant on demand and not aiming to “empty” the breast
⭐️ Minimize pumping**
⭐️ Most massage isn’t helpful, with the exception of manual lymphatic drainage
⭐️ Avoid saline soaks (like the haakaa hack) or castor oil
⭐️ Use ibuprofen to help with inflammation.
They also stated these issues occur because of an imbalance of breast milk, so if you are dealing with an oversupply, working with an LC is important. Dysbiosis may also be a factor.
These came out right as I was creating “The Clogged Duct Cure” which is available for $9 this week only. It is filled with lots of great information about preventing, treating, and understanding clogged ducts - [ Ссылка ]
What do you think on these recommendations? I’ll admit a few of them I may not totally agree with… but they are worth trying first!
(For more info, just google ABM protocol #36. Honestly, it’s kind of hard to understand a lot of it - I am still trying to make sure I totally understand what it all entails haha).
**The “avoid pumping” recommendation obviously isn’t an option for those who do pump. They state that the recommend avoiding it due to there not being a bacterial exchange between the infant and the breast - some have suggested encouraging more skin to skin and have them baby “lick” or latch without suckling. The protocol also doesn’t address the fact that having an incorrectly sized flange or an off center flange can cause clogged ducts. If you are pumping, I recommend working with a pumping savvy lactation consultant to determine the root cause of your clogged ducts. #breastfeedingproblems #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeedingsupport #cloggeduct #lactationeducation #lactationspecialist #newmomtips
