This talk highlighted the efforts being made by OVC and the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) to bridge the long-standing gap between research, policy, and practice. The talk included an analysis of groundbreaking efforts from BJS to enhance existing data that often go underutilized. Those efforts include the National Crime Victimization Survey undergoing a redesign to provide a more nuanced understanding of victims and their unmet needs; the first national Census of Victim Service Providers; and the challenges and opportunities associated with defining and engaging the field at a time when increased funding and innovation are encouraging its growth and change. Additionally, the talk addressed how efforts to bridge the divide have already shed critical light on the lack of victim services in key settings, such as within law enforcement, and how the public health community has seen success in addressing violence and filling gaps in knowledge essential to the field.
