A LATAM Airlines plane collided with a firetruck on the runway of Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, as it was taking off on November 18, killing two firefighters, according to the carrier.
No passengers or flight crew members were killed in the incident, the airline said. In a Twitter post, the airport announced that operations at Jorge Chavez would be suspended until the afternoon of Saturday, November 19.
The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, but Jorge Chavez International Airport said they were “conducting all the necessary investigations”.
Footage shared widely on social media shows large the moment the plane collides with the truck on the runway, catching fire and smoking as it grounds to a halt.
President Pedro Castillo paid tribute to the firefighters on social media. “I express my heartfelt condolences to the relatives of Ángel Torres and Nicolás Santa Gadea, brave firefighters who died in the accident,” he wrote on Twitter.
