A flood plain is defined as an area of flat land alongside a river that gets covered in water when the river floods. Flood plains are naturally very fertile due to the river sediment, which is deposited there, and is good for growing plants.
But flood plains can also be very challenging places, and farming crops on them can be full of risks, but can also be quite rewarding.
This video shares the story of how we grew a crop of soya beans on one of the flood plains at Winterthorn, Florida 1. During the 2022-2023 rain season, heavy rains led to the Chongwe River inundating it, and putting the crop at risk.
But in the end, our gamble paid off and we reaped the rewards of the excellent soils.
