US officials have confirmed the deaths of up to 12 US service members after two suspected suicide bomb attacks on Kabul airport.
The Pentagon confirmed at a news briefing Thursday afternoon that a series of blasts in the Afghan capital killed 11 US Marines and one Navy medic providing support for the evacuations of US personnel and Afghan citizens from Hamid Karzai International Airport. 15 other US service members were injured.
Gen Kenneth McKenzie of US Central Command said that his “working assumption” was that the blast occurred as a suicide bomber was attempting to pass through a security checkpoint at the airport gates. President Joe Biden is expected to address the nation regarding the attacks at 5:00 p.m.
