Update: This is a very old video and it seems like Tineye has improved a lot. Make sure you try Tineye and you will be surprised by the results it produces.
Let's check out in this Video: Which is the best Reverse Image Search Engine? Tineye or the NEW Google Search by an Image?
Reverse image search is actually a content-based image retrieval, aka CBIR, query technique.
You need to provide CBIR system with a sample image and the system will use this sample image for information retrieval . With reverse image search there's no need to guess at keywords or terms that may or may not return a correct result! All you need to do is to provide the system with a sample image and it may discover all the content (including manipulated versions and derivative works) on the web that's related to that specific sample image.
Both Tineye and Google uses "Reverse Image Search" technology and allows you to search for related images just by providing an image URL or by uploading an image from your computer or mobile device.
The uploaded image is then analysed by Google/Tineye and is compared with trillions of images that are already present in their database. When the comparison is over, Google/Tineye will provide you with a list of all matching or similar images that are present (hosted) on various websites on the internet. Sometimes images's meta data is also taken into consideration by these search engines.
