Ireland’s lockdown measures resulted in a 15.7% decrease in transport emissions last year.
Peat-fueled electricity generation decreased by 51% and wind energy increased 15% leading to a 7.9% reduction in Energy Industry emissions.
These findings are part of EPA’s Provisional Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Ireland for 2020, published today. The report outlines that, in Ireland, emissions reduced by 3.6% compared to 2019, up 0.5% from the reduction in 2019.
Our report also notes that residential greenhouse gas emissions increased by 9.0% with an increase in carbon intensive fossil fuel use driven by low fuel prices and working from home.
Finally, agriculture emissions increased by 1.4% in 2020. This was driven by several factors, including a 3.2% increase in the number of dairy cows.
