lead in: new rules have been established to choose the winning skiers in next year's world cup skiing events.
the new rules were drawn up by the world cup committee of the international ski federation, at the 31st fis congress held in san carlos de bariloche, in the andean lake region of argentina-- a region of magnificent scenery 1,010 miles (1630 km) south-west of buenos aires.
from next season, the winner of the "combined" title must compete in all three disciplines, the downhill, slalom and giant slalom events, and not just in one or two of the disciplines.
also, the individual titles of each discipline will be decided on the best five results recorded by the individual skier, and not on the overall total of points amassed throughout the season.
commentary: the first session of the 31st fis congress opened last wednesday (april 27), in the victoria island hotel, on the picturesque victoria island-- where walt disney filmed bambi.
the president of the organising committee, vicente ojeda of argentina, officially inaugurated the congress, who talked about the history of skiing in argentina, an emergent skiing country.
he was followed on the rostrum by the president of the international ski federation, marc hodler of switzerland, who remarked that bariloche is the southernmost place in the world where skiing is practised.
the congress was attended by delegates from a total of 32 nations, who sent a total of 352 representatives.
