(19 Oct 2014) Supporters of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party were on Sunday celebrating their party's gains in two Indian state elections even as counting of votes was still underway.
Early trends showed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra and northern Haryana state and looked set to form the government in both states, currently ruled by the Congress Party.
Supporters waved flags and danced outside the BJP's offices in Mumbai.
The state elections were largely seen as a test of whether Modi's popularity would translate to votes favouring his party.
"Under the leadership of the BJP, a mini Modi government will be formed in Maharashtra, may victory be with them," said Kirit Somaya, local BJP leader.
Elections in the two states had taken place on October 15.
