Landing in the US after fleeing conflicts in Somalia, Yemen and Egypt, then-18-year-old Zaynab Abdi founded a soccer team within her international high school -- made up entirely of teen refugees like herself -- all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Student Council presidency and becoming the school Valedictorian. Now a student at St Catherine University, she’s begun a new organization: one that encourages all women, but specifically welcomes women of color, to become involved in campus sports and play soccer as a team. Beyond that, she’s even represented The Malala Fund at the UN General Assembly and works as an Immigrants and Refugees Young Ambassador for the Green Card Voices.
Soccer is more than just a sport. It’s a way for women and girls to extend their passion, confidence and courage to others. Whether it’s through art, charity or identity, soccer is constantly connecting us -- building a community of support and encouragement through every individual’s unique journey. Playing For Change does just that, capturing five females as they gear up for varying stages of life, career, and challenge -- while redefining possibilities both on the soccer pitch, and off.
