This video is a short introduction to a four-part vernal pool restoration webinar series. Details of each of the four webinar recordings are provided. This webinar was first presented on February 7, 2023 by the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks. Video produced by the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program.
Vernal Pool Restoration Webinar Overview: Pennsylvania has lost over half of its wetlands to development, farming and other land use changes. Wetland restoration projects can recreate habitats that support wildlife and improve the health of local watersheds. In this presentation, we will discuss the importance of vernal pools and the unique wildlife that use them. We will highlight restoration techniques and lessons learned through projects we completed at three State Parks in Pennsylvania. We will show the steps we took in planning, permitting, construction, restoring a native plant community, and monitoring vernal pool health. Additional resources related to vernal pool ecology, conservation, management, and restoration are provided at the end of each section.
