STORYLINE
Authorities in Greece said on Wednesday that at least two villages had been evacuated on the island of Evia, north of Athens, where a forest fire threatened homes, but some residents were later allowed back to their homes after the danger passed.
The Fire Service said four water-dropping planes were fighting Wednesday's blaze near the town of Aliveri, about 55 kilometres (35 miles) northeast of Athens.
Firefighting efforts have been hampered by strong winds.
Smoke from the blaze was clearly visible in the capital.
