Hurricane Francine whipped up wind and rain as the storm made landfall as a Category 2 storm Wednesday evening near Cocodrie and Morgan City, in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. Francine packed winds around 100 mph and sent heavy bands of rain into New Orleans. Roads were flooded and tens of thousands of people were without electricity.
After churning in the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm for a little over 24 hours, Francine reached hurricane status Tuesday afternoon. It gained strength overnight as it moved northeast through the Gulf. Though wind shear and dry air helped slow Francine's strengthening as it neared Louisiana's coast, it grew nonetheless, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and life-threatening storm surge.
