The Detroit Opera House was created in the carcass of a once grand theater in Detroit. Fittingly Cadillac chose this opulent structure to hold it's operatic, over the top symbolic introduction of the announcement of one of its many comebacks. With much bravado they reached back to its decadence past during the Depression when it built custom bespoke cars with massive 16 cylinder engines that only the few left untouched by implosion of the American economy could afford. But it was unseemly to drive such ostentatious vehicles then and the wealthy decided to be more circumspect. The era of the Olympian cars gave way to fear of being stoned in the streets.
The Cadillac 16 was its way of celebrating the booming economy of the early 2000s and the view that it would last forever. The 16 never went into production, the global economy collapsed once again and GM devolved into bankruptcy. It's unlikely that GM or any other car maker besides Bugatti will build such an audacious symbol of pure testosterone, gasoline and blustering flash.
