Although the number of jihadist terrorist attacks in the EU has decreased since 2018, the number of disrupted plots has increased substantially. This major security threat has also become more complex in recent years, a problem amplified by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left governments increasingly challenged in their response.
In this video, Wil van Gemert of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) discusses jihadist terrorist attacks, the evolution of EU law enforcement efforts to counter them, and the current status of cross-border cooperation.
Wil van Gemert is the deputy executive director of Europol's Operations Directorate, where he oversees efforts to counter organized crime, terrorism, and cyber crime. Previously, he served in several senior roles with the Dutch National Police Agency (KLPD) and the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), including as director of national security and head of the National Cyber Security Centre.
