canada defeats us in exhibition tuneup for international series
note: a few years ago canada, who's national sport is ice hockey and who prides itself on having the best players in the world, got tired of seeing the soviet national team dominate international play with its amateur team -- which by north american standards are comprised of professionals. since canada's best players were playing in the north american professional leagues, they were not eligible for international "amateur" competition. to decide who's hockey players were truely the best, a yearly competition was inaugurated where team canada, an all-star team of professionals, played the soviet national team in a home-and- home series. canada won the first year, the soviets the following year. now other countries have gotten interested in the competition for who's best, and this year instead of russia vs canada, it's the best international hockey competition in the world -- the canada cup series. in addition to the canadians and soviets, the series will include team usa, comprised of the few american-born professionals in the north american leagues; and the national teams of finland, sweden, and czechoslovakia. the us and canada faced each other in an exhibition tuneup for the competition scheduled to begin next as expected, canada won handily.
