STORYLINE
Police clashed with scores of pro-Tibet protesters near the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi on Friday.
The chanting protesters were trying to reach the embassy, in a wealthy New Delhi neighbourhood, when they were stopped by police swinging bamboo batons.
"Long live Dalai Lama. We want free Tibet," shouted one demonstrator.
Police could be seen arresting at least two dozen people.
No serious injuries were reported.
Earlier Friday, more than 100 Tibetan exiles began two weeks of detention in northern India after police arrested them during a march to their homeland to protest China's hosting of the Olympic Games.
The exiles are being held in a state-run hotel while authorities investigate charges they threatened the "peace and tranquility" of the region, a march coordinator said.
Also on Friday, police in the Nepalese capital Katmandu scuffled with about one-thousand protesters, including Tibetan refugees and dozens of Buddhist monks, during a rally in support of demonstrators in Tibet.
About 12 monks were injured, a police official said, none seriously.
The rally comes after days of rioting and demonstrations in the streets of Tibet's ancient capital, Lhasa, to protest Chinese rule.
The Katmandu demonstration, which began as a candlelight rally at a prominent Buddhist shrine, quickly became an angry march, as protesters tried to make their way to the Chinese embassy.
Police attempted to block protesters to stop them from marching and scuffles broke out.
Tibetan refugee and protester Jampa Lama called for the Chinese government to meet the Dalai Lama for talks.
Nepal's mountainous border with China is a key route for Tibetans fleeing Chinese rule, though most of those refugees eventually move to India, where Tibet's government-in-exile, and the Dalai Lama, are based.
The Katmandu demonstration came as protests by Buddhist monks in Tibet flared into violence, with shops and vehicles burned and gunshots fired in the streets of Lhasa.
A radio report said two people had been killed in what have become the largest demonstrations in nearly two decades against Beijing's nearly 60-year rule over Tibet.
