I was joined this week by Sherri Samuel on the Warrior Academy Podcast!
I want to mention that my interviews are informal, they’re basically laid back conversations with interesting people.
I don’t go into them with a list of questions or a script. I just have a coffee and let the conversation flow.
Knowing Sherri’s background as a Primary Educator and the founder of the SEL Hub, a children’s well being business I was excited (and expecting) to ask lots of questions about the educational system and improving mental health for young people.
We talk about corporal punishment with kids.
We talk about how this is engrained in many ethnic minority cultures. How many young people grow up being hit by their parents and how normal that is for many families, even today.
We talk about the impact of this type of discipline at home on children, long term.
We talk about the reason why parents hit their children.
I have strong opinions on this and discuss the main reason why parents feel this is acceptable.
Sherri has a powerful purpose and she courageously, and authentically shares her story with me.
After growing up in a disadvantaged area, to a single parent home, her brother faced many challenges with his mental health and eventually committed suicide at the age of 22. This experience led Sherri down a challenging path.
Sherri struck me as such a resilient soul. Our conversation was truly inspiring.
We discuss the importance of possitive male role models for young men.
We talk about “Time out” and whether sending kids away for miss behaving is damaging and a form of isolation?
We talk about the reality of parenting and how it’s hard to find the time to follow what we know is “best practice”.
Sherri shares the impact of her work in helping children process their emotions.
I loved talking with Sherri. This was one of those interviews that flowed so well and even tho we talked about some challenging and traumatic topics, we still managed to have a laugh and keep a sense of humour as navigate the bumpy road that life throws at us.
