China has announced targeted military drills in several areas around Taiwan. Beijing has described the exercise as "necessary" and "justified", following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan -- a territory China considers its own. Warships and jets have been spotted in waters and skies near Taiwan, including the firing of long-range ammunition in the Taiwan Strait. Taipei said the manoeuvres violate UN rules, invade its territorial space and pose a challenge to free air and sea navigation. China has insisted its drills have yet to cause any issues related to freedom of navigation.
