Opening monologue delivered by a young Virginia Madsen playing Princess Irulan. To recap some, but certainly not all, of the story, we learn that control of the spice melange is crucial for traversing through and effectively ruling the universe, and that it can only be harvested from the desert planet Arrakis, a.k.a. Dune.
The character of Princess Irulan serves as a de facto narrator in Dune, with excerpts of her later writings used as epigraphs before each chapter of the novel. Within the storyline, Irulan is established as the eldest daughter of the 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank, and has four younger sisters and no brothers.
In the far future, the known universe is ruled by Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. The most valuable substance in the empire is the Spice, a drug that extends life and expands consciousness. The Spice also allows the Spacing Guild to fold space, permitting safe, instantaneous interstellar travel.
Dune is a 1984 motion picture directed and written by David Lynch and based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name.
The film stars Kyle MacLachlan in his debut role as Paul Atreides, and includes an ensemble of well-known American, Latin American, and European actors in supporting roles, including Sting, José Ferrer, Francesca Annis, Sian Phillips, Virginia Madsen, Linda Hunt, Patrick Stewart, Max von Sydow, and Jürgen Prochnow, among others. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City and included a soundtrack by the band Toto. As in the novel, the central plot concerns a young man foretold in prophecy as the "Kwisatz Haderach" who will protect the eponymous desert planet from the malevolent House Harkonnen and save the universe from evil.
