Justin Fruechte, Forage and Cover Crop Specialist at Millborn Seeds, walks us through a field of Millborn's Premium Grazing Mix a few weeks after planting.
transcript:
This is Justin Fruechte, the Forage and Cover Crop Specialist with Millborn Seeds. We came back out to this field of Millborn's Premium Graze just to show you what it looks like and so you can get the feel of it when you turn out cows here in the Fall...of what it's going to be like.
So it's the 2nd week of November. Obviously we've froze. It's been pretty cold. Most of the nights have been in the 30's. So our sorghum sudangrass...you can see that it has died. And that's just fine. That's ok. But everything else is lush and green.
Our Winfred Brassica...we've got this huge, robust plant with big leaves on it. Extremely good nutrition. Very cold tolerant. We've got these huge turnip bulbs out here. You can see the cows are kind of picking at...chewing at them already.
We've got some Graza Radishes in here. Look at that puppy! Doing some good stuff for the soil. Providing some great forage. So what we've done is we've created this really good diet. We've got these lush green, highly nutritious brassica species that they're munching on. And we've got this lower fiber, digestible sorghum sudangrass where they're getting a little more dry matter from. And it's the highest yielding thing out here. As well as a little bit of Millet that's frozen off in here too. So that's kind of balancing their diet. Seems like when we get mixes that are straight Brassica species it's a little too rich for them. A little too nutritious. Too digestible. It goes right through the rumen too fast and they're not taking full advantage of that high quality feed. So the sorghum sudangrass and dead millet kind of help slow down that rumen passage flow a little bit.
So we've got cows out here. They'll be able to stay out here as long as possible...until we mow this down to the ground. Even though it's been below freezing, we're still growing on these Brassica species because of their excellent cold tolerance. And they won't actually die until they get well into their teens.
An awesome example of our Millborn Premium Grazing Mix...and showing how you can utilize this ground to create a whole lot of forage for your cattle here in the winter.
I'm Justin Fruechte, thanks for watching!
