Spanish firefighters on Saturday battled the first major wildfire of the year, which has so far scorched more than 4,000 hectares of land and forced more than 1,500 villagers in the Valencia region to flee their homes.
More than 500 firefighters have worked to bring the fire, near the village of Villanueva de Viver, under control. Emergency services say they have stopped the fire from spreading and are now focused on securing the perimeter.
An unusually dry winter across parts of southern Europe has raised concerns of another devastating wildfire season.
The weather is forecasted to be hotter and drier this spring along Spain’s northeastern Mediterranean coast, increasing the risk of fires, the country’s meteorological agency Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia (AEMET) said last week.
