The existence of racism within health care systems has created the most significant barrier for Indigenous peoples to access quality, equitable care. The way in which health care systems are structured and how Indigenous peoples encounter care, in turn, affects the way they are treated. Historically, medical education has indirectly reinforced the legacy of racial segregation in health care.Cultural safety and anti-racism awareness in relation to Indigenous peoples is necessary to address systemic barriers and is one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action related to health. This presentation will discuss the need for ongoing education related to systemic and structural racism within health care and society at large in order to improve Indigenous health outcomes and achieve meaningful reconciliation.
