Engine cadet will be the future Chief engineer. Therefore, the engine cadet, in his entire contract, must learn things in the engine room. This include how to prepare the main engine, what are the things to be done.
The preparation of the main engine when the ship is arriving to a port is not entirely the same to the ship leaving a port.
In arriving, the fresh water generator must be stopped. The temperature of the jacket will be reduced at this time and this temperature will be insufficient to make good fresh water. Also, the surrounding sea water may be not that clean to produce good water for the ship. The main engine will be reducing rpm. Then later on will come to stop.
In leaving the port, the preparation is different. The main engine will be started. Air bottle must be filled. Main Engine must be warmed up. Turning gear is necessary in this purpose. Another generator must be started, and so on. There are so much things the engine cadet must learn.
The lube oil pump must run during turning gear. Lubrication while turning gear must be done too. Other ship uses camshaft. Its pump must be turned on too.
Of course, this knowledge cannot be possibly absorbed in one day or one month but throughout the engine cadet's whole contract he must learn something. One knowledge gain a day, 30 knowledges a month. He must be observant.
He can learn what is a fresh water generator, why is turning gear necessary, what is the purspose of lube oil pump, what is indicator cock, what is air bottle or air reservoir, how to drain air from the line, etc., etc. There are soany things to ask. He must ask in order to know these things in engine room.
The chief engineer was once an engine cadet.
