Horse races are run over many distances and, just like athletes, some horses are faster over shorter distances, while others are blessed with stamina.
In horse racing, all race distances are traditionally measured in “furlongs” – one furlong being equal to 220 yards or 200 metres, with eight furlongs in a mile.
The minimum distance a horse can run over in Ireland is five furlongs or 1,000 metres and while races on the Flat in Ireland generally go no further than two miles, in the National Hunt – races over hurdles and fences – two miles is actually the shortest race distance.
If you look down the track you will see numbered posts just inside the rails and these act as a countdown to the finish, showing many ‘furlongs’ are left to run to reach the winning line.
