A decade ago, President Barack Obama pulled US troops from Iraq. Following the withdrawal, the country has struggled with political strife and instability. Many Christians living in the region face religious persecution. Pope Francis visited Iraq earlier this year to address the dwindling number of Christians in the country. Executive Vice President of the Religious Freedom Institute, Eric Patterson, joins to give us a brief overview of what the past decade has looked like in terms of religious freedom in Iraq and how the removal of the US military presence affected religious freedom. Patterson shares whether there has been any work between the Vatican and Iraqi leaders to improve conditions for Christians following the pope's trip. On another note, Christians in Nigeria have been facing religious persecution as well. Patterson tells us more about that situation and how the US can help mitigate these human rights violations. A group of Senators sent Secretary of State Antony Blinken a letter asking why Nigeria was taken off the list of countries of particular concern regarding religious freedoms. The Executive VP of the Religious Freedom Institute discusses this.
