No trains have crossed Friargate Bridge in Derby since 1968 - but people passing under the old cast iron structure frequently see or hear a steam train - clicketty-clacking along long vanished tracks, loudly sounding its whistle as it rolls to an unknown destination.
As a youth, I saw the phantom train in daylight - late one afternoon as I walked to my grandparents’ home…but none of the people with me saw it. I had never heard any supernatural stories about the bridge at that time & I imagined that I had seen something rare or even unique…but I was wrong. The train has been observed or heard so often that one suspects that it is running to some spectral schedule.
