The Afanc was a fearsome, beaver-like creature that lived in the rivers and lakes of Wales, causing frequent and devastating floods that plagued the people living along the banks of the River Conwy. Despite many attempts to kill the Afanc, the creature's skin was impenetrable, and the people grew desperate.
The Wise Men of Betws-y-Coed devised a plan to lure the Afanc out of the Llyn-yr-Afanc pool in the River Conwy and transport it to a remote lake high in the mountains, far from the people's homes. They enlisted the help of a brave young maiden, who sang a soothing Welsh lullaby to the Afanc, luring it out of the water. The men then quickly chained the sleeping Afanc to Hu Gadarn's mighty oxen, and together they struggled to drag the monstrous creature up the mountains to its new home in Llyn Glaslyn, below the summit of Mount Snowdon.
After the successful relocation, the men began to argue and fight over who deserved the most credit for the feat. The Wise Men, however, recognized that it was the combined effort and unity of the men and the oxen that had allowed them to defeat the Afanc. The story concludes with the Afanc now trapped in Llyn Glaslyn, unable to escape and cause further harm to the people.
