We start our walk, and this video, from the high position of Monsal Head with far reaching views down to the Viaduct, River Wye, Monsal Dale and beyond. First we head past and under the Headstone Viaduct which used to be the steam train route between Bakewell and Buxton in the Peak District. Nowadays it’s a popular cyclist and walkers route. Then we pass grazing cows to the impressive waterfall which is actually the Monsal Dale Weir. We head back and on towards Cressbrook then Water-cum-Jolly Dale. Our favourite name for a Dale! Continuing along the riverbank we reach the now converted buildings of what was Litton Mill. Crossing the small footbridge we had a short climb up through trees to reach the Monsal Dale trail. You can follow this trail and tunnels with lots of walkers and cyclists all the way back to Monsal Head but we decided to stay high following a small path which had wonderful views down to the river and all the places we had passed earlier. It is a bit exposed in places so don’t take this route unless you have a head for heights. We came back down to the Monsal Head trail near the Viaduct and finish our walk back up to Monsal Head taking a path right next to the Headstone Tunnel.
Visit Monsal Head and Monsal Dale and you won’t be disappointed, it’s a stunning spot. There are refreshments available, and often an ice cream van in the car park.
Filmed on a GoPro Hero Black camera.
