Food myths in pregnancy. Once you become pregnant there will be advice pouring in from all directions neighbors friends mothers grandmothers uncles aunts relatives everyone has advice about food and then you are left wondering whether there is anything at all that you can eat well I want to clarify some of the myths today traditionally our elders tell us don't eat some foods they are hot don't eat some other foods they are cold but that is a myth there is no such concept in modern medicine all foods once they go into your body will undergo some chemical processes combustion generate heat and energy and carbon dioxide as a by-product so essentially all foods generate heat in your body don't eat dry fruits don't eat nuts don't eat dates they are hot well that's not true you can have dry fruits dates nuts seeds in small quantities that is the important point you should not overdo anything but if you are eating these substances in moderation it is absolutely safe it will not cause miscarriages and it is not harmful to your baby bananas and curd and buttermilk are not cold it will not give you cuff and cold it does not cause your baby to get sneezes so you can have these foods safely too another common myth that we hear is do not eat papaya pineapple or jackfruit during pregnancy it can cause miscarriages well if you consume raw papaya then it might contain some chemicals which cause uterine contractions so yes avoid eating raw papaya but good ripe papaya or pineapple or even jackfruit in moderation can be consumed just to be on the safer side you can avoid these fruits during your first trimester and you can have them later in your second trimester or third trimester another food myth that we commonly hear is if you eat black colored foods the child will become black and if you eat white colored foods the child will become white well that is not true the color of the child is genetically determined the apple doesn't fall too far away from the tree so the baby will take off after its mother or father in color no matter what you eat on that note a lot of people believe that having kesar and milk during pregnancy will lead to having a fair child well sorry to disappoint you but that is also a myth colour of your child should not matter at all all we want is a healthy baby a smart baby who will grow up to be a happy individual and a responsible individual so doing all these things during pregnancy for getting a certain colored baby i think it should strictly be discouraged another common myth is if you consume a lot of ghee especially in your third trimester vaginal delivery will be easy well no the ghee does not go and lubricate the vagina it's a complete myth you can have ghee in small proportions throughout pregnancy one or two scoops of ghee a day are considered absolutely healthy during pregnancy but if you are overweight or obese or if you are having any pregnancy diabetes then be very very cautious while consuming ghee.
