Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Konig self-tensioning snow tire chains here on our 2020 Toyota RAV4. So some important things to know about this chain. It's going to be a diamond pattern. You can see that particularly on the sides of the chain here, where the chains actually form up to make these diamond shapes. Compared to a ladder pattern style chain that has a lot of perpendicular links of chain that go across the tire this is gonna be a little bit smoother ride quality and give you good traction on turns.
The ladder pattern does give a little bit better traction on starts and stops, but it's also a rougher ride quality. The actual link shape here is gonna be a square shape link. I will say these are a smaller link size so you might not notice too much difference but that square shape link will help bite into ice a little bit more than something like a cable chain might. Just because it has those hard edges on the chain, gives it a little bit more bite and grip. That being said, because of the smaller link size I think this is a good all around chain for some light snow, little bit of ice kind of in the middle of the road conditions.
Now the thing that makes this chain probably stand out from some of the other options is the built in self-tensioner. This feeds through our buckle at the bottom, gets pulled tight and is on a constant form of tension right here that it hooks to. That's gonna make sure that even as you're driving around, maybe the fit kind of shifts or it moves on the tire it's going to constantly be pulled tight so you can ensure that you've got tension going down the road. We always recommend purchasing tensioners separately for other chains, but with this one that's built in you don't need to worry about that and it's all just included right out of the box. Overall construction here is going to be a manganese nickel alloy that's gonna be more corrosion resistant and durable making sure that these last for a couple of seasons with ease.
Comparing that to a low carbon steel. Those low carbon steel options are just a little less durable, less corrosion resistant. So these ones should hold up just fine. On front of the wheel all of these chains and pieces that come across it are either plastic or coated in a rubber or vinyl material. So if it does make contact with the wheel, it's not bare metal contact and should help protect your vehicle and make sure that it stays looking nice.
These chains come in a set of two and they both store right inside this hard shell case, really easy to carry around and they fit in there really well too. It's a nice quality case. You don't have to worry about water seeping through or any sort of tears over time because it's that hard shell plastic. Comparing that to a lot of other chains that just come in a basic bag that sometimes rips or they're hard to repackage. This one should last for a long time. It makes it easy to store in your vehicle. And the best part about this is they install really easily. You don't have to crawl underneath the vehicle and make any connections at the bottom behind the tire. Everything's pretty straightforward to do so let's walk you through that process now. Now the first thing you wanna do when you're laying out your chain is making sure that nothing's tangled up. We've got ours laid out here today and everything's looking pretty good. It's a couple things we do wanna take note of. In the middle of the chain, we're gonna have an opening. This is where our tire's going to sit. Behind that, we've got our coated cable. This will sit kind of behind the tire we'll make our connections up top, that sort of thing but we want this in the back. And then the other thing we're gonna take note of is that it's facing the correct way. So on the side it says Konig right here. We want those letters face down. The other thing you can look at is the cross sections where the chain actually attaches to that cable. There's gonna be a more smooth side, and then if I flip it over, there's gonna be a more hooked end. We want that hooked end facing away from the tire and that smooth side facing upward. After we've verified everything's laid out properly nothing's tangled up, you can feed it behind the tire. I'm gonna feed this section back there just because there's less to maybe get caught up behind the tire. And as you do this, things probably will get tangled. So just d
