What better intention can a leader have than helping people succeed? I made this video in response to a subscriber who asked, “How can I help other people become better people?” Here are my thoughts on developing your team members and guiding employees to grow stronger.
Your responsibilities as a leader lie in being a catalyst for positive change and developing your team members so they work well together. Start by understanding where your employees are coming from and how they work. People generally fall into these four personality categories:
- Initiators. These impatient team members pace the floor and say, “Let’s just do it.” They’re strong, powerful, and dominant.
- Networkers. Just as quick to act, networkers enjoy working in teams. They’re charming and great at making connections. Both initiators and networkers tend to be extroverted.
- Cautious people. These quieter employees worry about doing things differently. They play devil’s advocate, and they force initiators and networkers to stop and think.
- Specialists. These team members focus on details. They make sure everything is in perfect order before pulling the trigger. Along with their cautious coworkers, they provide checks and balances.
Consider these types of workers and imagine them on a team, learning from one another. Picture them working together, helping people succeed by encouraging each other to try new behaviors and hone new skills.
In developing your team members, help them recognize the unique competencies and important contributions of their coworkers. Remind your employees that every role adds value and every personality deserves respect. Helping people succeed is all about showing them new possibilities for change and growth.
