Despite their similar-sounding names, these soil additives serve distinct, and almost opposite purposes.

Perlite's primary use is to enhance soil aeration and drainage.

For example, Perlite is a key element when amending soil for growing succulents and it is incorporated in smaller ratios in potting soil.

Conversely, Vermiculite shares Perlite's lightweight and porous qualities but excels in retaining moisture.

That's what makes it so good for is covering seeds.

Vermiculite is used to boost soil's water retention capacity and marginally influences soil aeration, compared to Perlite.

Vermiculite essentially acts like a sponge, holding and releasing water as the soil requires.

Furthermore, Vermiculite enriches soil by enhancing the dispersal and retention of nutrients.

To cater to varying plant requirements, both Perlite and Vermiculite can be combined effectively.
