Welcome aboard the newly extended InterCity 5 line! We are currently in Rorschach on the shores of beautiful Lake Constance and waiting for our turn to depart. Our route takes us onto the relatively steep route up to St. Gallen, the biggest city in northeastern Switzerland. Our trains tilting technology allows for higher speeds, it will be a quick and convenient non-stop ride to the next bigger city, Winterthur. After a short stop at Zurich Airport, we're already in the middle of Zurich! An interesting early morning ride with fast curves and beautiful views awaits you here! If you'd like to continue the ride to Biel, you may do so in Zurich.
You can clearly see the tilting motion in curves. The idea behind tilting trains is to allow for faster cornering speeds than regular trains. This reduces travel time without the need to build new high-speed lines or heavily modifying existing tracks. Just compare a regular train to a car and a tilting train to a motorbike. Cornering fast in a car is possible, but wears the tires faster, is more dangerous than ordinary driving and the lateral forces are unpleasant to the passengers. On a motorbike, it is normal to lay into curves, which results in a little bit more pressure into the direction of seating, instead of lateral forces. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
