Of all of Napoleon Bonaparte’s men, one man stood above the rest. This is Marshal Michel Ney: The Bravest of the Brave. Ney enlisted in the French Army at 18 and was a good friend of fellow officer Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (future Swedish King Charles XIV John - discover his story in History’s Most Fascinating Figures). Net was highly respected by his fellow officers and the soldiers under him. In 1804, he was named a Marshal of the Empire. As a French Marshal, Ney’s defining moment occurred during the Napoleon’s Russian retreat. As head of the rear guard, he was cut off and from the rest of the army, he successfully led the rearguard out of Russia. Ney famously was the last man of La Grande Armée to leave Russia. For this, Napoleon declared him the “Bravest of the Brave”. Although he was one of the main advocates for Napoleon’s first abdication, thry reconciled on Napoleon’s return and Ney served him during his 100 days, including Napoleon’s final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.
