Today is the first day of the inquests at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria into the Life Esidimeni tragedy. In the coming two weeks, presiding Judge Mmonoa Teffo will hear oral arguments from all parties involved to determine the cause of the deaths of the 141 mental health care patients after they were moved from Life Esidimeni into unlicensed and unsuitable NGOs in 2016. Section 27 says it will argue that former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, former Director of Mental Health Directorate Doctor Makgabo Manamela, and the owner of Precious Angels NGOs should be charged for culpable homicide. The Right to Healthcare public interest group represents 44 mental healthcare users out of the 141. Section 27 Executive Director, Sasha Stevenson, joins us virtually ahead of the first day of the inquests.
