Walking up a grassland near Kaplani and Masrana villages on the Mussoorie-Dhanolti ridge brings into sharp focus the proximity of the high Himalaya and the closeness of the plains of north India. Deodar or Himalayan cedar forests alternate with grasslands in this late autumn early winter brown-ness when the grasses have dried up before the winter sets in.
