Senators John Kennedy and Ted Cruz, both members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have joined their Republican colleagues in urging Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to conduct a comprehensive and impartial trial in the Senate to consider the articles of impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Mayorkas has been impeached by the House of Representatives on grounds of "high crimes and misdemeanors," as specified in two articles of impeachment.
The responsibility to "try all Impeachments" is granted exclusively to the Senate by Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 of the U.S. Constitution. In response to Senate Democrats' apparent intentions to dismiss or table the impeachment charges, Senator Kennedy expressed his concerns, stating that there is no charitable interpretation of Senator Schumer's plans and that they disregard the work conducted by the House of Representatives and the longstanding history of the United States.
