This is a short video featuring the Red Sox segments in the Sept. 20, 1977 episode of This Week In Baseball, narrated by the great Mel Allen.
With the 1977 and 1978 Red Sox two of my favorite teams, and with complete-game broadcasts of this era so rare, I decided to take Sox content from TWIB and post it, hopefully handy for fellow Boston fans who might not watch the whole show.
The American League East race comes down to the wire, and the Sox are shown winning one of three at Yankee Stadium, one of three in Baltimore (thanks to rookie Ted Cox in his MLB debut), and capturing a game vs. New York at Fenway that included a great catch of a foul pop by catcher Carlton Fisk.
Then there are TWIB 1977 superlatives, featuring Jim Rice; Nolan Ryan (dominating the Sox at Fenway); reliever Bill Campbell; Carl Yastrzemski; and finally, rated the best defensive play of the year, Fred Lynn's home-run saving catch in Minnesota.
As this was the last show of the season, I included the credits at the end. TWIB was a must-watch in those days, and they always did a great job!
