The En Primeur week is coming soon in Bordeaux, and we want to share this unique Bordelais tradition with you!
What is it? “En Primeur,” also known as “Wine Futures,” is a way to purchase the most in-demand Bordeaux wines 1-2 years before they are bottled and released on the market.
When? Each spring, the top estates welcome wine professionals from all over the world to Bordeaux to taste barrel samples of their latest vintage. Estates use the feedback they receive about the quality of the wine to estimate demand and set initial prices. In May, the estates release their prices and wine merchants can buy the en primeur wines.
Who? Only the 300 wine merchants (negociants, as they are called in France) who make up the “Place de Bordeaux” are authorized to buy wine futures from the Chateaux.
Why? The biggest advantage of buying wine futures is the price. The futures price of a wine is almost always lower than the final market release price. Buying wine futures also allows you to purchase the most sought-after wines that may be virtually impossible to find when they are released on the market. Buying in futures also allows access to the largest range of bottle formats, including half bottles, magnums, and larger-sized bottles. However, these wines are still limited, and can run out. With the futures alerts you’ll be the first to know when your favorite wines have been released to the public.
