In this video we are explaining and comparing Near Infra-Red (NIR) surgical lasers like CO2 with blue diode lasers. NIR wavelengths of surgical diode lasers between 900 and 2,000 nanometers have a low coefficient of absorption with melanin and hemoglobin pigments.
Compared to CO2 laser, the absorption coefficient of water is lower. However, as the near-infrared photons energy level is a bit higher than CO2 lasers than direct cell vaporisation is still achieved just not as fast and efficiently as CO2 lasers. The typical applications for this type of diode laser are soft tissue surgeries, not bone surgeries.
Similar to CO2 lasers, thermal damages are significant because the main chromophore of photothermolysis is water and patient recovery is affected by edema, pain, and inflammation as well. In comparison to CO2 lasers, diode lasers remained at a reasonable transportable size with an ordinary electric power supply.
