An electronic alarm system is a low voltage electrical circuit with sensors on entry door and
windows. When a door or window is opened, its sensor detects the interruption in the flow of
electricity and then triggers a warning signal, such as a siren or strobe light.
On top of the perimeter sensors, many alarm systems also include motion detectors to monitor
large areas inside the house. When something moves within the detector's range, a sensor sounds
the siren, with the most sophisticated motion detectors being able to distinguish between the
threat of an intruder and, for example, the family pet or a wild animal wandering around the
house, reducing the possibility of false alarms, which are a very real concern.
The perimeter sensors and interior motion detectors are part of a stand-alone system, with the
siren and flashing lights being the only deterrents for discouraging the intruder and preventing
the break-in.
When a sensor is activated or faulted, it sends an alert to the alarm control panel. The system will
then respond based on the programming settings for that zone. For example, one sensor might
only cause alarms if activated while the system is Armed, while others may cause alarms at any
time, regardless of the current system status. Making sure that your sensors have the correct
programming settings is very important. Zones can also be programmed to have a delay period,
which gives the user a short period of time to Disarm the system before an alarm signal is sent
out.
A few of the best benefits of an alarm system include deterring crime by, of course, warning both
you and the intruder that there's either 1) an intruder or 2) an available security system, and
allowing you a window of time to take action or even prompting the burglar to go away.
An alarm system is best if you have a limited budget, one that you can properly attach to your
doors and windows without breaking the bank. There's no question that alarm systems can
increase the odds of catching a burglar if your home does get broken into, with 60% of convicted
burglars saying that they will target another home if they discover a security system in the home
they are trying to rob.
So, will you be getting an alarm system for yourself? Let me know in the comments below. Also,
