The eruption of an underwater volcano near Tonga Saturday caused a ripple effect across the Pacific, including an oil spill off the coast of Peru. Authorities say the significant surge caused by the volcano's eruption led to an oil spill from the La Pampilla refinery.
Authorities say the oil spill is now under control. Crews are working to clean up and further control the situation.
However, Peru's Minister for the Environment, Ruben Ramirez, says the area's biodiversity suffered "serious damage" which could even affect the health of local residents.
An environmental entity with the Peruvian government is investigating the refinery following the oil spill to determine the cause of the disaster and the full damage it caused.
