The Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base.
The military says the missile travelled at 15,000mph for about 4,200 miles over the Pacific.
The nuclear deterrent missile landed at a test range near an atoll in the Marshall Islands.
In the event of a nuclear attack, these missiles would be deployed against a hostile power.
